Oh hi there! It’s been so long, how’ve you been? Who am I? (Yeah I don’t blame you for wondering who this virtual person is suddenly striking up a conversation with you on the internet.) Well let me introduce myself then. I’m the Jamporter behind this blog, checking in on my fellow travel addicts after what seems like a hiatus of Mad Men Season 5 proportions (but in reality is only 6.5 months). Why so long? Here’s the view from 3000 feet.
LAYOVER IN NO MAN’S LAND
A few months ago, I realized that I had been heading in the wrong direction with this blog (caught the wrong flight I suppose). Sentences were left hanging, countless posts drafted, nothing making the cut to the Publish button. I was in an existential crisis of blogger proportions (which is admittedly low on the existential crisis scale). A hiatus was taken, regrouping efforts initialized, and then life intervened. (Isn’t it fun when it does?) It seemed my writer’s block would be extending its stay.
Part of it was what, through the clarity of hindsight, we now call 2016. It was the best of times (I got engaged, yay!), it was the most tumultuous of times (so much work and real estate transaction drama, political train wrecks we couldn’t take our eyes off of). It was basically life telling me to focus locally.
The other part was the lack of travel. By September I had visited Paris, Hawaii, and Maritime Canada, yet the inspiration to write wasn’t there. I often wondered if I had misplaced my “raison d’être” somewhere in the Atlantic. What’s a travel blogger to do when they aren’t travelling? It was a question I was willing to ponder, so ponder I did.
FINDING TRUE NORTH (a.k.a “I never had a cent to my name, so I changed my name.”)
What my pondering led me to was a better understanding of myself and the things I enjoy doing (and subsequently writing about). I’ve always loved how travel influences your daily life whether you realize it or not, from the restaurants you visit craving a taste of travels past or the curiosity with which you now approach your hometown. Combine that with being categorically incapable of focusing on a single topic throughout my life, and suddenly, I had my light bulb moment. I figured out not only why I had such an intense case of writer’s block, but also what I wanted to do about it. I needed to start writing about my other passions too.
This refocusing of my blog also allows me to appreciate the city I call home. My inspiration doesn’t exclusively reside outside the Toronto city limits. Toronto also has a story to tell, so I started listening. And you know what? It’s pretty interesting! Also? I’m getting my groove back! So much winning.
READY, SET, GO!
We’re now almost through with the third month of 2017. Already. Valentine’s Day is over. Mardi Gras is over. Even International Woman’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day are over! (Gahhh there goes time…) I’m busy planning a wedding and a honeymoon. Oddly enough, life is just as busy as it was last year, yet this year I’m mixing up the content and ready to hit that Publish button.
I can’t wait to tell you all about my trip to Boston, a city I so fondly remembered as a 16 year old that passed the test of time with flying colours (because, obviously). But first, let’s talk honeymoon planning! Stay tuned for a look at what it takes to plan a honeymoon with some wisdom from fellow bloggers who’ve been through it all (with a little bit of my own thoughts sprinkled in for flavour).
Until then, happy travels!
