Hating on rain? Hold your tongue. We embrace the rain in all its watery glory!
Last month, the Portjam & Co. crew talked about what to do, where to shop and how to stay dry in the rain because those heavenly water-bits can be a serious pain in the backside when not expected. Alas, we firmly believe that there is no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choices (a wise quote, eh?). Anyway, our wanderlust is too strong to be deterred by any weather. In fact, sometimes running wild in the rain is exactly what we seek. So where to go when in search of rain?
Here’s a look at our top four destinations that absolutely must be saved for a rainy day. Let us know what you think or tell us about your favourite soaking spot in the comments!
1. Winter Storm Watching: Tofino, Canada
Tofino sits on the rugged edge of Western Canada. Staring out onto the Pacific Ocean, it’s hard to believe that it’s Japan that lies beyond on the other side of the ocean. Winter Storm Watching runs from November to February each year and breathtakingly captures the natural and untamed beauty of the region. Whether you look on from a cosy indoor oasis or prepare your raingear for an outdoor adventure, there is something magical about the spectacularly turbulent waters in this part of the world. Described as an awe-inspiring experience that invigorates the soul and named a Canadian Signature Experience, it is an epic destination not to be missed.
2. Wettest Place on Earth: Lloró, Colombia
For the intense rain-lover, you need not look further that Lloró. No monsoon or specific wet season is required for it to rain in this town because heavy downpours are almost a daily occurrence. This is a location that should be on every self-respecting rain lovers bucket list!
3. Summertime Storms: Florida, USA
Miami? Orlando? Fort Lauderdale? Wherever you’re headed in the sunshine state, rest assured that a tropical summer storm will cool you off nicely each afternoon. When you know that the clouds will clear and sun will shine within the hour, it is so easy to revel in the rain.
4. Sink or Swim: Venice, Italy
Get there while you can! Venice is romanticized the world over for its storied canals, gondoliers and well, it’s waterline. Heavy rainfalls remind us all that the stunning city may one day become a distant memory. Until then, enjoy the spectacle that is Venice in the rain. A place where it isn’t altogether absurd to see people engaging in water sports in the middle of Piazza San Marco.
